A Splash of Red for the Summer Ahead

This season, we’re putting a fresh twist on tradition with a bold, fruit-forward sangria that proves red can chill, too. Served over ice and bursting with ripe summer fruit, red wine sangria brings the depth you love with the refreshment you crave.

Whether you’re poolside, at a backyard BBQ, or watching the sun dip below the horizon, a glass of red sangria is your go-to for effortless summer sipping. It’s juicy, vibrant, and just the right amount of bold—because summer deserves more than just white and rosé.

What kind of fruit should I use?

Red wine sangria is all about juicy, vibrant fruit that enhances the wine’s natural richness. Classic choices include oranges, lemons, and limes for a bright citrus kick, plus berries  to add sweetness and color. Apples and stone fruits like peaches or plums bring texture and depth, while a handful of pomegranate seeds or cherries can add a bold, juicy twist.

Mix and match based on what’s in season—but the key is keeping it fresh, colorful, and full of flavor.

Should other alcohol be included?

It’s totally up to your taste! Traditional sangria often includes a splash of brandy to boost the flavor and add a little extra kick. You can also play with orange liqueur (like Triple Sec or Grand Marnier) for a citrusy twist or a touch of vodka for a stronger pour.

That said, it’s not required—a good bottle of red wine, fresh fruit, and a little fizz can stand on their own. If you prefer a lighter, more sessionable sangria, feel free to skip the spirits and let the wine shine.

What should I pair with my sangria?

Sangria is a social sipper—and it loves food that’s just as lively. Tapas are a classic pairing: think cheese boards, olives, cured meats, and flatbreads. The fruitiness of sangria also plays beautifully with grilled meats, BBQ, and spicy dishes like tacos or paella.

Looking for something lighter? Try fresh salads with fruit, goat cheese, or citrus vinaigrettes. And don’t forget dessert—dark chocolate, berry tarts, or a slice of citrus cake are all perfect matches for this sweet-tart summer pour.
